Madonsela to host 3rd Annual Social Justice Summit and International Conference in Oct

Sunday 3 October 2021

Delegates from around the world will gather for two days of discussions on 11-12 October under the auspices of the Musa Plan for Social Justice (Social Justice M-Plan) which was adopted by a multi-stakeholder summit in 2019.

The October event has been convened by Professor Thuli Madonsela (in her capacity as the Law Trust Chair in Social Justice at Stellenbosch University) and the Council of Social Justice Champions. It will review progress achieved in the implementation of the Social Justice M-Plan broadly, while focusing on fostering economic parity, specifically.

“We look forward to very important and topical deliberations that will form part of the Third Annual Social Justice Summit and the 2nd Annual International Social Justice Conference. This year’s theme is ‘Social justice, economic equality, and peace - a new socio-economic pathway for South Africa and the continent’”, says Madonsela.

The Summit, she explains, will also consider the impact of the current Covid-19 pandemic and the policy and regulatory responses to it on exacerbating or reducing poverty and inequality. The impact of egregious poverty and inequality on social cohesion will also be discussed with the dialogue also taking into account the July unrest in South Africa and similar social disruptions across the continent.

“There are two distinct aims for the two respective days,” says Madonsela.

“The Conference on day one will focus on emerging academic scholarship and innovative technologies seeking to advance social justice. It is about leveraging academic scholarship for impactful research to help governments and corporate decision-makers to integrate social justice considerations in their policy design and product development, focusing on economic parity and inclusion. Conference outcomes will further inform summit deliberations.

“The Summit, which will take place on the 12th of October will reflect on progress achieved since the adoption of the Social Justice Declaration at the inaugural summit regarding the advancement of equality and the elimination of poverty through leveraging the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS).

"We hope to emerge with practical ideas on how to accelerate progress, particularly on economic parity. We also hope to emerge with a plan on galvanising broader stakeholder involvement.”

The 3rd Annual Social Justice Summit and 2nd Annual International Conference will take place on Monday 11 October (Conference) and Tuesday 12 October (Summit).
