Table Mountain Cableway invites you to celebrate its 92nd birthday

Sunday 10 October 2021

It’s an undeniable fact that Table Mountain is South Africa's most iconic silhouette, and for more than 90 years, the Cableway, which was officially opened to the public on 4 October 1929, has been safely transporting millions of visitors from across the globe up its steep slopes offering them majestic views of the Mother City and Table Bay below.

Things have certainly come a long way since that very first trip when passengers took a wooden cable car with a tin roof to the top of the mountain. In relation to the 4-5 minutes it takes today, it took the cable car nearly ten minutes back then to carry 19 people and a conductor up the 704 metres to the summit. Today the cable car carries up to 65-passengers and has a rotating floor that ensures visitors get a 360-degree aerial view. (The cars have been carrying fewer passengers per trip, in accordance with COVID19 regulations.)

After a trying few months for all South Africans, the team from the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company (TMACC) are excited to welcome more visitors to the mountain. “With the easing of the lockdown to level one and the summer season fast approaching, now is the perfect time to visit and celebrate our beloved mountain with us,” says Wahida Parker, MD of TMACC.

In celebration of the cableway's birthday, TMACC is offering South Africans with a valid ID reduced cableway rates during October. The limited online offer is available from Monday – Friday only and includes a R200 return ticket for adults and a R100 return ticket for children.

Since its inception, the cableway has transported over 29 million visitors. “A lot has changed over the decades, but the cableway remains one of Cape Town’s biggest tourist attractions, ensuring that every visitor has a world-class experience when enjoying the heritage and beauty of Table Mountain,” says Parker.

The mountain has also received numerous accolades. This year marks the 10th anniversary of being voted as an official New7Wonders of Nature. It has also been voted as Africa’s Leading Tourist Attraction by the prestigious World Travel Awards 3 years in a row. Table Mountain is currently in the running for the title of “World’s Leading Tourist Attraction” and, for the first time in the Cableway’s history, the “World’s Leading Cable Car Ride”.

Further details on the special offer, including T&Cs, are available on the company's website, https://tablemountain.net/our-blog/celebratethecableway-with-us.
